Honduras Decaf MCP- Methylene chloride process is a solvent used in methods of direct decaffeination to maintain coffee flavor better than other processes. U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has determined that methylene chloride is safe for use in decaffeination.
During this decaffeination process, the beans are soaked in hot water to extract much of the caffeine and then removed to add the methylene chloride solvent to bond with the caffeine. After the compound is skimmed from the surface of the mixture, the beans are returned to reabsorb the liquid, removing between 96% – 97% of caffeine from a batch of coffee.
